The year 2007 marked the first year of NFL-Flag Football for SFX Youth Sports, which was highly successful. The program is sponsored through the National Football League, which helps us provide a fun and exciting way to learn the game of football in a non-contact way. The rules are supplied by the NFL as well as the uniforms, footballs and flag belts. The game is fast-paced and full of action, while emphasizing teamwork and sportsmanship.
Our regular season kicks off usually the 2nd Saturday in September and runs through the first Sunday in November. Playoffs will start two weekends before Thanksgiving Day. All teams make the playoffs. A “Super Bowl” Championship game for each division will be played the weekend before Thanksgiving Day and consolation games for teams not making the championships may be played upon requests. Trophies are awarded to 1st and 2nd place Division winners only.
There will be three divisions:
- 9 – 11 years old: Coed Division
- 12 – 14 years old: Boys Only
- 15 – 17 years old: Boys Only
All games will be played in the Long Meadow in Prospect Park. Each team must have a minimum of 8 players and a maximum of 10. Full teams from other organizations are welcome. Coaches, feel free to recruit from your baseball teams. All individuals who register will be placed on a team. Coaches are needed in all divisions so step up if you can. You’re guaranteed to have a lot of fun.
The games will be played in two 20 minute halves with a 5 minute halftime. Each team consists of 10 players with 5 players at a time on the field. The offensive team plays for a first down at midfield and a touchdown in the opponent’s end zone. Running and passing plays are allowed, although there are no-running zones at midfield and near the goal lines. The defensive team covers receivers, rushes the passer and grabs the flags to stop the player from advancing. No tackling is allowed in NFL-Flag football. Scoring is the same as the pros: a touchdown scores 6 points with either a 1- or 2-point conversion. There is no kicking or punting.
