News

The year 2007 marked the first year of Flag Football, which was highly successful. The program is sponsored through the National Football League, which helps us provide a fun and exciting way to learn the game of football in a completely non-contact way. The rules are supplied by the NFL, which also supplies the uniforms, footballs and flag belts.  The game is fast-paced and full of action, while emphasizing teamwork and sportsmanship.

Registration is now open for the 2008 SFX Flag Football season, and the registration deadline is August 15, 2008. Our regular season kicks off Saturday September 13th and runs through Sunday November 9th.  Playoffs will be held the weekend of November 15 – 16th. All teams make the playoffs.

Super Bowls for each division will be played on Saturday November 22nd and consolation games for all those not making the Super Bowls will be played on Sunday November 23rd. Trophies are awarded to 1st and 2nd place Division winners only.

This year there will be three divisions:

9 – 11 years old: Coed Division

12 – 14 years old: Boys Only

15 – 17 years old: Boys Only

Each team must have a minimum of 8 players and a maximum of 10. Full teams are welcome. Coaches, feel free to recruit from your baseball teams. All individuals who register will be placed on a team.

Coaches are needed in all divisions so step up if you can. You’re guaranteed to have a lot of fun.               back to top

Rules

Each team consists of 10 players with 5 on the field. The offensive team plays for a first down at midfield and a touchdown in the end zone. Running and passing plays are allowed, although there are no running zones at midfield and near the goal line. The defensive team covers receivers, rushes the passer and grabs the flags to make “tackles.” Scoring is the same as the pros: a touchdown scores 6 points with either a 1- or 2-point conversion. There is no kicking or punting.

For a complete set of the rules, please visit the official NFL website: http://flag.nflyouthfootball.com

The games will be played in two 20 minute halves with a 5 minute halftime. All games will be played in the Long Meadow in Prospect Park.                 back to top
